About this campsite

Overview

White Horse Lake is an extremely popular fishing lake, 19 miles southeast of Williams, in northern Arizona. The lake's campground is conveniently located an hour from Grand Canyon National Park's south rim and surrounded by the exciting and diverse scenery of Kaibab National Forest. A number of forest attractions are nearby, including scenic overlooks, dams and hiking and mountain biking trails.

Recreation

In addition to fishing, the area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching. Anglers seek out Large Mouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill.

Facilities

White Horse Lake boasts 77 single unit campsites with tables, campfire rings, grills and tent pads. There is also a large group site that can accommodate up to 60 visitors, 10 double sites, tent-only sites and accessible sites. Tents, trailers and motor homes up to 45 ft. long can be accommodated. There are many amenities offered to campers, including water faucets, a small boat ramp, restrooms, and trash bins.

Kaibab National Forest is nestled on the Colorado Plateau, an area of land that was uplifted by geologic processes. White Horse Lake sits at an elevation of 6,600 feet, and the campground is forested with plenty of open areas. Wildlife such as deer and elk frequent the shoreline. Summer temperatures range from 50 degrees at night to 80-90 degrees during the day. Summer thunderstorms, known as the monsoon, can build up quickly, especially during July and August. Snow is common from December through March.

Overview Dogtown Lake offers a scenic setting convenient to Grand Canyon National Park and the cities of Williams and Flagstaff, Arizona. The campground is situated in a pine forest along the shore of a small and scenic lake. Visitors come here to hike, fish, mountain bike and explore the area's cultural and natural history. It's also a great place to relax and enjoy the sound of the wind in the pines and the spectacular view of nearby Bill Williams Mountain. Recreation Campers are drawn to the area's hiking and fishing opportunities. The lake is stocked with trout, crappie and channel catfish. Visitors can enjoy a guided nature trail near the lake and a hiking trail that leads to a scenic overlook of the area from the top of nearby Davenport Hill. The calm waters are inviting for canoes, kayaks and electric motorboats. Single motors of one horsepower or less are permitted. Facilities The campground offers 50 individual campsites, four double sites and one group site that can host up to 80 people overnight. All sites are accessible. The sites are level with pull-through and back-in options for RVs. Restrooms, garbage bins and water faucets are available, however, there is no dump station at the facility. Overview Fernow Cabin offers a quaint, forested retreat near Flagstaff and Sedona, in central Arizona. The rustic, three-bedroom log cabin is a retired U.S. Forest Service guard station constructed in the 1970s to house firefighters during wildfire season. Now, it offers groups of up to eight people a unique recreation opportunity in a beautiful Southwest setting. The cabin can be accessed by passenger vehicle, however caution required for the last mile; high clearanance recommended. Roads are not always maintained after each weather event. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities. Recreation The area is a hub for hiking, mountain biking and off-road vehicle riding. The cabin is adjacent to the Sycamore Canyon and Red Rock/Secret Mountain Wilderness areas, which boast numerous hiking trails. Bikes and off-road vehicles are only allowed on designated roads and trails. Flora, fauna and unique rock formations in the surrounding area also present excellent opportunities for photography. Facilities The cabin has running water from mid-May through mid-October. It also has an indoor shower, hot water heater, solar lights, a small dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms, a loft, wood stove and covered porch. It is furnished with beds and mattresses, dressers and a small dining table with chairs. There is no electricity available. If visiting before mid-May or after mid-October, guests must bring their own water. The kitchen includes a stove, oven, small refrigerator, pots, pans, utensils, dishes, coffee pot. The vault toilet is a short walking distance from the cabin, and an outdoor campfire circle and grill are also provided. The ramp to the front porch is accessible. Firewood and propane are provided (click here for more cabin details ). Visitors must bring their own sheets (two double beds and four single beds) and blankets, or sleeping bags, flashlights, towels, garbage bags, dish soap, dish towels, extra firewood, an axe for splitting wood, and matches and newspaper for lighting the wood stove. There are two picnic tables outside. Lawn chairs are not provided, but are a nice treat for summer months. Natural Features The site lies in a ponderosa pine forest on the Mogollon Rim, a 200-mile slope that ranges between 5,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation. At an elevation of 6,656 feet, the cabin is fairly isolated, offering a private location for visitors to enjoy nature. The area is characterized by warm summer days and cool nights, with afternoon thunderstorms common from mid-June through mid-September. Nearby Attractions The nearby city of Flagstaff offers ample lodging, shopping and dining opportunities. Grand Canyon National Park is about a two-hour drive northwest of the cabin.

Overview Kaibab Lake sits among the diverse landscape of Kaibab National Forest of northern Arizona. The lake is a popular spot for fishing and picnicking, as well as for RV and motorhome campers. With Grand Canyon National Park just 60 miles north and several other cultural and historic sites nearby, the location is a hotspot for recreation, learning and sightseeing. Recreation Kaibab Lake is a popular area to join friends or family for a picnic in the cool pines. A number of forest attractions are easily accessed from the campground, such as overlooks, dams and hiking trails. A nature trail wanders through the facility. Swimming is not allowed in the lake, but anglers can take to its shores or deeper waters via an accessible fishing pier and small boat ramp. On clear nights, campers can turn their eyes to the night sky to enjoy spectacular views of summer stars. Facilities The campground offers individual, double and group campsites with picnic tables and campfire rings. Tents, trailers and motor homes up to 40 feet can be accommodated. Campers have the convenience of a group picnic area, restrooms, trash bins and water faucets. Drinking water is provided, however motor homes and RV water tanks cannot be filled due to limited water supply. Firewood bundles and ice can be purchased on site. Overview The Spring Valley Cabin and Bunkhouse offer a peaceful retreat with spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks, quiet solitude, wildlife viewing opportunities, and access to nearby trails. All just minutes away from the City of Flagstaff and an hour from the spectacular Grand Canyon National Park. This getaway can host up to 17 people between the cabin and adjacent bunkhouse. The facility can be accessed by vehicle; Forest Road 74 is not maintained during winter and may be closed during heavy snowfall. The distance from the winter parking area to the cabin is one mile. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety and must bring several of their own amenities. Recreation With miles upon miles of national forest and park lands to explore, visitors have no shortage of outdoor activities from which to choose. The cabin is adjacent to the Spring Valley Trail System, which provides access to the cabin when the roads are covered in snow. Hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking are very popular in this area, and there are plenty of trails. Kendrick Mountain Wilderness is nearby and provides several trailheads and entry points into designated wilderness. Visitors might be lucky enough to spot wildlife such as elk, mule deer, wild turkeys, javelina, coyote and numerous birds and raptors that live in the area. Facilities The facility is made up of two buildings, and can accomodate ten people at the main cabin and seven in the bunkhouse. The cabin has a living/dining area, a side room with a woodstove, a bedroom, a restroom with flushable toilet and shower, and a kitchen with drinking water and plenty of kitchen supplies (i.e. propane range stove, refridgerator, microwave, and dishes). The cabin can sleep up to ten people and has an arrangement of three bunk beds with twin sized mattresses and two futon couches. Electric/propane heaters are available for use. The bunkhouse offers three bunkbeds with twin size mattresses and one full-size futon couch, available to sleep up to seven people, and a small woodstove. Located outside is an enclosure for firewood, picnic tables, grills, and a vault toilet. Guests must bring their own food, bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets and/or sleeping bags), bath and kitchen towels, garbage bags, warm clothing, dish soap, and flashlights, amongst other necessities. Upon check out, the facility must be cleaned, and all food and trash removed prior to departure. Natural Features The structures are located at an elevation of 7,320 feet, overlooking a wide meadow and is nestled beneath mature ponderosa pines. The cabin was constructed in 1917 as the residence for rangers who worked at the guard station. The bunkhouse served as the office. It is still occasionally used as a field station for U.S. Forest Service employees. Winter brings a mix of sun with cold temperatures and occasional winter storms. Summer temperatures are relatively pleasant, but weather can very. Visitors should come prepared for changeable mountain weather, cold nights, thunderstorms and snow from fall through spring. The nearby town of Williams and the city of Flagstaff have numerous restaurants, hotels, gift shops, grocery stores and cultural attractions.
