Privacy Policy

Effective 11 October 2026

EscapeTo helps you find places to camp. This policy explains what we collect when you use the EscapeTo app and escapeto.travel, why, and what you can do about it. We have tried to keep it short and plain.

Who we are

EscapeTo is run by Jola Pty Ltd, an Australian company. We are responsible for the personal information described here. Questions or requests go to [email protected].

The short version

  • You can browse without an account.
  • We collect what we need to run the service. We do not sell your information.
  • There are no advertising trackers in the app.
  • You can delete your account in the app at any time, and that deletes your personal data with it.

What we collect

Your account. In the app you sign in with Apple. The website also offers Google, Facebook and Shopify. The provider sends us your name and email address, and Google and Facebook also send your profile picture. If you use Sign in with Apple and hide your email, we only get Apple’s private relay address. We never see your password.

What you save and share. When signed in, we store the campsites you save, your trips and their stops, vehicle profiles, your travel interests, and any campsite alerts you set up. Reviews and photos you post are public and show your display name.

Things you send us. Feedback, campsite suggestions and listing claims. The app’s feedback form also sends your device model, and an email address if you choose to add one so we can reply.

Location. Only if you allow it. We use it to show campsites near you and, if you ask the AI assistant something, we send your location with your question so it can answer “near me” questions. In the app’s ride mode, location keeps working with the screen off so it can guide you along your route. That guidance happens on your phone: we do not receive or keep a record of your movements.

AI assistant chats. What you type (or say) to the assistant, plus your location if shared, is stored on our servers so the conversation can continue. We also keep a short excerpt of each message to see how the assistant is doing.

Voice. If you use the microphone, Apple’s speech recognition turns your speech into text. Apple may process the audio to do this. We only receive the text.

Crash reports. If the app crashes, iOS gives the app a technical crash report (device type, iOS version, what the code was doing). The app sends it to our server. It does not include your name, email or account.

Push notifications. If you turn them on, Apple gives us a device token and we store it on your account so we can send your alerts. Turn them off any time in iOS Settings.

Server logs. Like most websites, our servers record IP address, browser or device type, the page requested and the time. We use these to keep things running and secure. They are rotated and overwritten as they fill.

On your device only. Recent searches, recently viewed campsites and ride logs stay on your phone.

Cookies and analytics

The website uses a few cookies and browser storage:

  • et_country remembers which country you were browsing.
  • NEXT_LOCALE remembers your language, if you change it.
  • Your sign-in, saved campsites and chat session are kept in your browser’s local storage.
  • Google Analytics sets its own cookies to measure how the website is used, such as which pages are visited. We use this to improve the site, not to target ads.

The iOS app has no analytics or advertising SDKs.

How we use it

  • To run EscapeTo: show campsites, plan routes, save your trips, publish your reviews and photos.
  • To answer your questions in the AI assistant.
  • To send the alerts and notifications you asked for.
  • To fix bugs, keep the service secure and stop abuse.
  • To reply when you contact us.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

Services that help us run EscapeTo

Each of these gets only what it needs to do its job:

  • Hetzner hosts our servers and database, in Singapore.
  • Anthropic provides the AI model behind the assistant. Your messages (and location, if shared) are sent to it to generate an answer. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms it does not train its models on them.
  • Apple, Google, Facebook and Shopify handle sign-in, depending on which you choose.
  • Apple also delivers push notifications, does speech recognition, and provides driving directions in the app’s ride mode and the “Open in Apple Maps” button.
  • Map providers. The app draws its maps from OpenFreeMap. The website uses Google Maps, and looks up places you search for with Google and OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service. These providers see the map area or search you request and your IP address.
  • Open-Meteo provides weather forecasts. It gets the location of the campsite or point you are looking at.
  • imgix delivers campsite photos.
  • Resend sends our emails, such as campsite alerts.
  • Google Analytics measures website use (website only).

Booking and other sites. Booking buttons and links take you to the campground, park agency or booking site (for example Recreation.gov). Anything you do there, including payment, is covered by their privacy policy, not ours.

We may also share information if the law requires it.

Deleting your account

In the iOS app, open the menu (top right of the Home screen) and go to Settings → Delete Account. You need to be signed in. You can also email [email protected] from the address on your account and we will do it for you.

Deleting your account permanently removes:

  • your account and profile, including your name, email and push token;
  • your Sign in with Apple link: we ask Apple to revoke it;
  • reviews you wrote and photos you uploaded (including the image files);
  • your trips, saved campsites, vehicles, travel interests and alerts;
  • feedback you sent while signed in, and any connected app or AI assistant access.

A few records are kept but cut loose from you. Purchase records from the App Store or Google Play and records of bookings made through a partner are kept for refunds and tax law, with the link to your account removed. Campsites you suggested may stay published, without your name or email.

AI assistant conversations and crash reports are not removed by account deletion. If you want your conversations deleted, email us.

How long we keep things

We keep your account data until you delete your account. Server logs are overwritten as they rotate. Purchase and booking records are kept as long as tax and consumer law requires (in Australia, generally five years).

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
  • correct anything that is wrong;
  • delete your information;
  • stop using it for a particular purpose.

These cover your rights under the Australian Privacy Act, the GDPR in Europe and the UK, and California and other US state privacy laws. Email [email protected] from the address on your account. We will reply within 30 days and will not treat you differently for asking. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to your local privacy regulator. In Australia that is the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Where your data goes

Our servers are in Singapore and we are based in Australia. The services listed above may process data in other countries, including the United States. Whatever country you use EscapeTo from, we protect your information the way this policy describes.

Security

All traffic to EscapeTo is encrypted (HTTPS), and access to our systems is restricted. No service can promise perfect security. If a breach is likely to harm you, we will tell you as the law requires.

Children

EscapeTo is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you think a child under 13 has an account, email [email protected] and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. For bigger changes we will also tell you in the app or on the website before they take effect.
