Overview

The Spring Valley Cabin and Bunkhouse offer a peaceful retreat with spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks, quiet solitude, wildlife viewing opportunities, and access to nearby trails. All just minutes away from the City of Flagstaff and an hour from the spectacular Grand Canyon National Park. This getaway can host up to 17 people between the cabin and adjacent bunkhouse. The facility can be accessed by vehicle; Forest Road 74 is not maintained during winter and may be closed during heavy snowfall. The distance from the winter parking area to the cabin is one mile. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety and must bring several of their own amenities. Recreation

With miles upon miles of national forest and park lands to explore, visitors have no shortage of outdoor activities from which to choose. The cabin is adjacent to the Spring Valley Trail System, which provides access to the cabin when the roads are covered in snow. Hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking are very popular in this area, and there are plenty of trails. Kendrick Mountain Wilderness is nearby and provides several trailheads and entry points into designated wilderness. Visitors might be lucky enough to spot wildlife such as elk, mule deer, wild turkeys, javelina, coyote and numerous birds and raptors that live in the area.

Facilities

The facility is made up of two buildings, and can accomodate ten people at the main cabin and seven in the bunkhouse. The cabin has a living/dining area, a side room with a woodstove, a bedroom, a restroom with flushable toilet and shower, and a kitchen with drinking water and plenty of kitchen supplies (i.e. propane range stove, refridgerator, microwave, and dishes). The cabin can sleep up to ten people and has an arrangement of three bunk beds with twin sized mattresses and two futon couches. Electric/propane heaters are available for use. 

The bunkhouse offers three bunkbeds with twin size mattresses and one full-size futon couch, available to sleep up to seven people, and a small woodstove. 

Located outside is an enclosure for firewood, picnic tables, grills, and a vault toilet.

Guests must bring their own food, bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets and/or sleeping bags), bath and kitchen towels, garbage bags, warm clothing, dish soap, and flashlights, amongst other necessities. Upon check out, the facility must be cleaned, and all food and trash removed prior to departure.

Natural Features

The structures are located at an elevation of 7,320 feet, overlooking a wide meadow and is nestled beneath mature ponderosa pines. The cabin was constructed in 1917 as the residence for rangers who worked at the guard station. The bunkhouse served as the office. It is still occasionally used as a field station for U.S. Forest Service employees.



Winter brings a mix of sun with cold temperatures and occasional winter storms. Summer temperatures are relatively pleasant, but weather can very. Visitors should come prepared for changeable mountain weather, cold nights, thunderstorms and snow from fall through spring.

Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim is a must-see attraction just over an hour away. The nearby town of Williams and the city of Flagstaff have numerous restaurants, hotels, gift shops, grocery stores and cultural attractions.

Overview Kaibab Lake sits among the diverse landscape of Kaibab National Forest of northern Arizona. The lake is a popular spot for fishing and picnicking, as well as for RV and motorhome campers. With Grand Canyon National Park just 60 miles north and several other cultural and historic sites nearby, the location is a hotspot for recreation, learning and sightseeing. Recreation Kaibab Lake is a popular area to join friends or family for a picnic in the cool pines. A number of forest attractions are easily accessed from the campground, such as overlooks, dams and hiking trails. A nature trail wanders through the facility. Swimming is not allowed in the lake, but anglers can take to its shores or deeper waters via an accessible fishing pier and small boat ramp. On clear nights, campers can turn their eyes to the night sky to enjoy spectacular views of summer stars. Facilities The campground offers individual, double and group campsites with picnic tables and campfire rings. Tents, trailers and motor homes up to 40 feet can be accommodated. Campers have the convenience of a group picnic area, restrooms, trash bins and water faucets. Drinking water is provided, however motor homes and RV water tanks cannot be filled due to limited water supply. Firewood bundles and ice can be purchased on site. The lake sits at an elevation of 6,800 feet, and pine forests and grass line its shores, while wildflowers add extra color to the landscape in late spring and early summer. Summer temperatures range from 50 degrees at night to 80-90 degrees during the day. Summer thunderstorms, known as the monsoon, can build up quickly, especially during July and August. Overview Kendrick Cabin offers groups of up to 10 people the chance to experience spectacular mountain views, numerous hiking and mountain biking trails, and several cultural and historic attractions of the Southwest region. The rustic, three-bedroom masonry and wood cabin is a retired U.S. Forest Service fire guard station constructed in the 1960s. It lies just minutes from downtown Flagstaff and about an hour from the world-famous Grand Canyon National Park. Kendrick Cabin is located approximately 22 miles north of Flagstaff. The site is open from mid-April to mid-November. There is no electricity available and running water is provided only during peak season. All roads are suitable for a sedan except during winter months. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities. Recreation The Flagstaff area is a hub for hiking and mountain biking in warmer months and skiing in the winter. Dozens of trails are within a short drive of the cabin, including the scenic Kendrick Mountain Trail and several trails on the San Francisco Peaks. Bikes and off-road vehicles are allowed only on designated roads and trails. Families and photographers can enjoy a morning or evening walk along the Kendrick Park Watchable Wildlife Trail, which is adjacent to the cabin. Hunting is also available in many nearby areas within the Coconino national forest. Facilities The multiple-room, two-story cabin is equipped with a solar lighting system, propane stovetop range, small refrigerator, dining area with a table and chairs, and a wood stove. Furniture includes two futon couches in livingroom, one double bed in the downstairs bedroom and two twin beds in each of the two upstairs bedrooms. Kitchen supplies include pots, pans, utensils, dishes, a coffee pot and can opener. A grill, campfire ring, picnic table and bathhouse with a flush toilet and shower are located outside, not far from the cabin. The cabin has an accessible ramp to the front porch, providing wheelchair access to the main floor of the house and one bedroom. The bath house and the path from the house to the bathhouse is not wheelchair accessible. The cabin provides running water from mid-May to mid-October; at other times, users must bring potable water. After October 15th the bathhouse will be closed and visitors must use the vault toilet outside. Due to higher elevation (8,200'), the water may be turned off by October 1st , if early season freezing occurs. Please call the Forest Service to confirm potable water availability. The cabin now has a solar lighting system in the main house. The bath house solar light is a dial switch that times out automatically. Please ensure all lights are turned off upon departure. Guests must bring their own bedding (or sleeping bags) for one double bed, two queen futons and four single beds, as well as flashlights, towels, garbage bags, warm clothes, dish soap, dish towels, an axe or saw for splitting wood, and matches and newspaper for starting fires in the wood stove. There are two picnic tables outside. Natural Features The cabin is located at an elevation of 7,910 feet, in the scenic Kendrick Park area at the base of the 12,000-ft. San Francisco Peaks, the remains of an old volcano. From the facility, visitors have wonderful views of the peaks, Kendrick Mountain and the surrounding forest, as well as the night sky on clear nights. The area is home to elk, deer, antelope, fox, coyotes, mountain lions, numerous birds and other animals. Nearby Attractions The nearby city of Flagstaff is a popular stop along historic U.S. Route 66 and offers plenty of restaurants, museums, shops and an astronomical observatory. Guests can also drive 58 miles to the Grand Canyon National Park's scenic South Rim.

Overview Dogtown Lake offers a scenic setting convenient to Grand Canyon National Park and the cities of Williams and Flagstaff, Arizona. The campground is situated in a pine forest along the shore of a small and scenic lake. Visitors come here to hike, fish, mountain bike and explore the area's cultural and natural history. It's also a great place to relax and enjoy the sound of the wind in the pines and the spectacular view of nearby Bill Williams Mountain. Recreation Campers are drawn to the area's hiking and fishing opportunities. The lake is stocked with trout, crappie and channel catfish. Visitors can enjoy a guided nature trail near the lake and a hiking trail that leads to a scenic overlook of the area from the top of nearby Davenport Hill. The calm waters are inviting for canoes, kayaks and electric motorboats. Single motors of one horsepower or less are permitted. Facilities The campground offers 50 individual campsites, four double sites and one group site that can host up to 80 people overnight. All sites are accessible. The sites are level with pull-through and back-in options for RVs. Restrooms, garbage bins and water faucets are available, however, there is no dump station at the facility. The lake got its name from the extensive prairie dog "towns" that once covered open areas near the lake. In spite of the name, this medium-sized body of water is surrounded by trees. Summer temperatures range from 50 degrees at night to 80-90 degrees during the day. Summer thunderstorms, known as the monsoon, can build up quickly, especially during July and August. Overview White Horse Lake is an extremely popular fishing lake, 19 miles southeast of Williams, in northern Arizona. The lake's campground is conveniently located an hour from Grand Canyon National Park's south rim and surrounded by the exciting and diverse scenery of Kaibab National Forest. A number of forest attractions are nearby, including scenic overlooks, dams and hiking and mountain biking trails. Please be advised: cell phone service can be poor/unreliable at the campground. Recreation In addition to fishing, the area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching. Anglers seek out Large Mouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. Facilities White Horse Lake boasts 77 single unit campsites with tables, campfire rings, grills and tent pads. There is also a large group site that can accommodate up to 60 visitors, 10 double sites, tent-only sites and accessible sites. Tents, trailers and motor homes up to 45 ft. long can be accommodated. There are many amenities offered to campers, including water faucets, a small boat ramp, restrooms, and trash bins.
