Thornbury Freedom Camp at Aparima Bridge Reserve offers a grassy camping area alongside the Aparima River, suitable for non-self-contained vehicles. Located off State Highway 99 near the small settlement of Thornbury, approximately ten minutes north of Riverton, the site is accessible from both sides of Gropers Bush-Thornbury Road. Campers may stay for a maximum of 28 days per calendar year under Southland District Council regulations. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash within the freedom camping area. The reserve features large surrounding trees, though larger vehicles may not fit beneath the bridge structure.
