About this campsite
Taiko Camp on Chatham Island is the Chatham Island Taiko Trust's operational base since 1971, supporting conservation efforts for the endangered Taiko seabird.
Taiko Camp serves as the operational base for the Chatham Island Taiko Trust, established in 1971 when local farmer Manuel Tuanui identified a sheltered forest clearing suitable for early efforts to rediscover the endangered Taiko seabird. Located in a protected pocket of Tarahinau forest on the Chatham Islands, the camp sits centrally among known Taiko activity areas and provides shelter from prevailing south-westerlies. Originally a tent city for volunteers and expedition members, the site has supported all Trust conservation projects for over five decades. Contact the Chatham Island Taiko Trust directly to confirm current access arrangements and available facilities.
