FISHTRAP LAKE SHELTERS
Overview Nestled among mountains and dense forests, the Fishtrap Lake area will appeal to anyone who loves boating, fishing or hiking. A man-made lake surrounded by natural beauty, Fishtrap Lake was created to help control flooding along the Ohio and Big Sandy Rivers. The lake's location allows visitors to choose from endless recreational opportunities, whether its water sports on the lake, hiking on nearby trails or picnicking in the picturesque group area. Recreation Boat ramps are available for fisherman and boating enthusiasts. The surrounding wildlife area provides numerous trails for hiking and horseback riding, and additional developed trails can be accessed at the nearby Lick Creek Recreation Area. Facilities Fishtrap Lake Shelters provide covered picnic areas with playgrounds, perfect for kids. While everyone can appreciate the scenery provided by the lake, which serves as a breathtaking backdrop to any party or family get-together. Shelters one and two are located at the Dam Site Recreation Area, and shelters three and four are located at the Grapevine Recreation Area. Camping is also available nearby at the Grapevine Recreation Area. Natural Features Fishtrap Lake sits in the rich coalfield country of Kentucky, surrounded by steep and lush mountainous terrain. The site is well-known for wildlife viewing and has become a haven for local animals, especially deer. Nearby Attractions Downtown Pikeville is 20 minutes North from project which provides; Hatfield Mccoy History tours, Dueling Barrel Brewery and Distillery, Kayaking, Horse Trails, Zipline, Jenny Wiley Theatre, and EXPO Center.

R.D. BAILEY LAKE GROUP SHELTERS
Overview Choose from three day-use picnic shelters at R.D. Bailey Lake, a scenic reservoir with views of the surrounding tree-topped mountains. Recreation The lake is best known for boating and fishing for largemouth, smallmouth, striped bass and channel catfish. Hunting enthusiasts can hunt small game such as rabbits and turkey in-season. Head to the Visitor Center for interesting exhibits, educational programs and tours of the dam and intake structure. There's also an impressive observation deck with viewing telescopes. Facilities Each shelter has a playground, flush toilets, drinking water and plenty of grassy space for sports. All three are near excellent shore fishing areas as well. Big Branch Shelter Big Branch is close to the headwaters of the lake. It has the most space of the three shelters, with substantial room for extra cars and enough tables to seat 100 guests. Horseshoe pits, basketball and volleyball courts, and the largest, newest playground can be found here. The site is equipped with two grills and electric hookups. Guyandotte Point Day Use Shelter Guyandotte Point sits at the lake's headwaters, just a quarter mile past the Big Branch Recreation Area. This is the best location for those who plan to go boating, as it's the only location with a boat ramp. Electric hookups and a large charcoal grill are onsite. Visitor Center Day Use Shelter The Visitor Center Shelter is nearly 400 feet above the dam, offering spectacular views of the glistening lake. The shelter is, as named, right by the Visitor Center, which is worth a visit. It's also at the trailhead of two popular hiking trails and the Below Dam Fisherman's Access. Horseshoe pits are by the shelter. No electric hookups are available. Natural Features R. D. Bailey Lake Group Shelters are on the Guyandotte River in West Virginia, about three miles east of the town of Justice. The R. D. Bailey Dam reaches 310 feet high, and the lake's surface area in summer is 630 acres. The region of the Appalachian Mountains boasts an abundance of oak, hickory and beech trees. Overview The John W. Flannagan Day Use Area boasts an expansive lake nestled in the rolling green Cumberland Mountains of southwest Virginia, offering visitors an oasis of recreation in the summer months. The nearby dam, built primarily for flood control for the Cranesnest and Pound Rivers, creates a breathtaking lake that is maintained at nearly 1,400 feet above sea level. This day-use facility is an ideal spot for picnicking, water activities, and hiking. Recreation Flannagan's reputation as a fisherman's paradise is well-known. Visitors can enjoy secluded coves of deep, clean water that are well-stocked with bass, bream, walleye and trout. Boating, canoeing, whitewater rafting, and biking top the long list of activities available nearby. Facilities Picnic shelters with grills, electrical hookups, a playground, and horseshoe pits provide an ideal location for parties and other get-togethers. Natural Features The John W. Flannagan Dam, completed in 1964, carves out a 1,145-acre lake with nearly 40 miles of beautiful shoreline in the lush Virginia terrain. Nearby Attractions The Lower Twin, Cranes Nest and Pound River Campgrounds, located near the day-use area, offer overnight camping.
