About this campsite

Historic Yukon River woodcutting site where loggers supplied firewood to sternwheelers, ending when vessels converted to oil and timber stands depleted.

17 Mile Woodcamp references a historic location along the Yukon River where woodcutters once operated one of over 100 camps supplying firewood to sternwheelers for more than forty years. Each winter, crews cut 200 to 300 cords per camp, building roads and using horses and later trucks to haul logs. The industry ended as timber stands depleted and vessels converted to oil fuel. The site serves as a reminder of the Yukon's riverboat era and the logistical efforts required to maintain transportation along northern waterways during the early 20th century.
