About this campsite

Historic South Taranaki reserve with basic camping, toilets and playground. Site of 1868 battle led by Riwha Tītokowaru. Managed by South Taranaki District Council.

Te Ngutu o te Manu Battlesite and Historic Reserve is a 20-hectare South Taranaki site on Ahipaipa Road near Okaiawa, managed by South Taranaki District Council. The reserve commemorates the September 1868 battle where Ngāti Ruanui leader Riwha Tītokowaru achieved a significant victory during the Taranaki Land Wars. Much of the reserve remains bush-clad, offering a peaceful setting with abundant birdlife. Basic camping facilities include toilets, a children's playground and a large open area suitable for camping and outdoor activities. Two powered sites operate on an honesty system. Contact South Taranaki District Council for current booking requirements and availability.
